Weight Pulling - Legs & Titles
What the heck are Weight Pull legs? To earn titles in different organizations, a dog must do something a specific number of times. Each of those is referred to as a leg toward the title.
Below are the requirements for the different organizations or a link to that organization's requirements.
AMCA - Alaskan Malamute Association
WWPD - Working Weight Pull Dog:
- A dog must qualify in 4 separate events. Dogs must be weighed before each event.
- On natural surfaces such as snow or dirt the weight pulled must equal or exceed 8 times the dog's weight.
- On artificial surfaces such as concrete, carpet etc, the weight pulled must equal or exceed 12 times the dog's weight.
- ISDRA, AMCA or IWPA rules must be used in qualifying for a weight pull certificate.
WWPDA - Working Weight Pull Dog Advanced:
- Dogs must qualify in 5 competitions. All dogs must be weighed at each event.
- Pulling 14 times his body weight on snow with a sled.
- Pulling 16 times his weight on any other natural surface with a wheeled cart.
- Pulling the following weights by weight class, on a man made surface:
80# and Under Class - 23 times the dog's weight
80-100# Class - 21 times the dog's weight
101# and Over Class - 19 times the dog's weight
- All weights are rounded down to the nearest whole #.
- ISDRA, AMCA or IWPA rules must be used in qualifying for a weight pull certificate.
WWPDX - Working Weight Pull Dog Excellent:
- Dogs must qualify in 5 competitions. All dogs must be weighed at each event.
- Pulling 14 times his body weight on snow with a sled.
- Pulling 16 times his weight on any other natural surface with a wheeled cart.
- Pulling the following weights by weight class, on a man made surface:
80# and Under Class - 23 times the dog's weight
80-100# Class - 21 times the dog's weight
101# and Over Class - 19 times the dog's weight
- All weights are rounded down to the nearest whole #.
- ISDRA, AMCA or IWPA rules must be used in qualifying for a weight pull certificate.
- In addition to requirements 1, 2 or 3 the dog must place in the top 1/3 of his weight class in each event. In the event the top 1/3 comes out as a fraction, that dog will qualify.
- If at a competition over 75% of the dogs pull the required weight, that pull will be disallowed.
IWPA - International Weight Pull Association
All pulls required for a certificate must be achieved in no more than two consecutive program years. The program year is from September 1 to August 31 the following year
Snow
- IWPA Working Dog: the dog must pull 5 times its own body weight in 4 different pulls on snow.
- IWPA Working Dog Excellent: the dog must pull 10 times its own body weight in 4 different pulls on snow.
- IWPA Working Dog Superior: the dog must pull 15 times its own body weight in 3 different pulls on snow.
Wheels
- IWPA Working Dog: the dog must pull 12 times its own body weight in 4 different pulls on wheels.
- IWPA Working Dog Excellent: the dog must pull 18 times its own body weight in 4 different pulls on wheels.
- IWPA Working Dog Superior: the dog must pull 23 times its own body weight in 3 different pulls on wheels.
UKC - United Kennel Club
1. United Weight Puller (UWP). To earn this title, a dog must earn a qualifying leg at three different UKC-licensed weight pulls. A dog earns a qualifying leg by completing an uninterrupted pull of a weighted vehicle loaded with the following weights for16 feet within 60 seconds:
a. On natural or artificial surfaces. Eight times the dog’s body weight on the day of the event for events held on natural or artificial surfaces, or
b. On snow. Three times the dog’s body weight on the day of the event for events held on snow, or
c. On rails. Ten times the dog’s body weight on the day of the event for events held on a rail system.
2. United Weight Pull Champion (UWPCH). A dog must earn the United Weight Puller title before it is eligible to earn points toward the United Weight Pull Champion title. A dog must then earn 100 additional championship points to become a United Weight Pull Champion.
3. United Weight Pull Champion Excellent (UWPCHX). A dog must earn the United Weight Pull Champion (UWPCH) title before it is eligible to earn points toward the United Weight Pull Champion Excellent title. A dog must then earn 250 additional championship points to become a United Weight Pull Champion Excellent.
4. United Weight Pull Champion Versatile (UWPCHV). A dog must earn the United Weight Puller (UWP) title before it is eligible to earn points toward the United Weight Pull Champion Versatle title. A dog must then earn an additional 100 points on one weighted vehicle and an additional 100 points, which may be earned on any combination of at least two types of weighted vehicles.
5. United Weight Pull Champion Outstanding (UWPCHO). A dog must earn the United Weight Puller (UWP) title before it is eligible to earn points toward the United Weight Pull Champion Outstanding title. A dog must then earn 100 additional championship points each on two different types of weighted vehicles.
6. United Weight Pull Champion Supreme (UWPCHS). A dog must earn the United Weight Puller (UWP) title before it is eligible to earn points toward the United Weight Pull Champion Supreme title. A dog must then earn 100 additional championship points on each type of weighted vehicle (rail cart, sled, wheeled cart.)
Championship Points Schedule. A qualifying pull is required to earn the following points:

Most weight pulled in event: Five bonus points shall be awarded to the dog (or dogs, in the event of a tie) pulling the most weight in the event provided the dog has earned the UWP title before the day’s pull. 5 points.
Most weight pulled per pound of body weight: Five bonus points shall be awarded to the dog (or dogs, in the event of a tie) pulling the most weight per pound of body weight in the event provided the dog has earned the UWP title before the day’s pull. This shall be calculated by taking the highest number of pounds pulled by a dog and dividing it by the dog’s weight. 5 points. |
APA - American Pulling Alliance
WP Titles are earned after completing one of the following pulls
12 x the dog’s weight = WP1
18 x the dog’s weight = WP2
23 x the dog’s weight = WP3
WP STAR Titles are earned after completing 100 pts towards each star title.
100 pts = STAR 1
200 pts = STAR 2
300 pts = STAR 3
APA POINT SYSTEM
A. 1st place = 10 pts
2nd place = 7 pts
3rd place = 3 pts
Most Weight Pulled 60 Pounds & Under = 15 pts * If two or more dogs pull the same weight, MWP will go to the dog with the faster time.
Most Weight Pulled 61 Pounds & Over = 15 pts * If two or more dogs pull the same weight, MWP will go to the dog with the faster time.
Most Weight Pulled per Pound 60 Pounds & Under = 15 pts
Most Weight Pulled per Pound 61 Pounds & Over = 15 pts
** There must be a minimum of 12 dogs under 60 and over 61 pounds for 1 dog to get points for both MWP and MWPP. If there is less than 12 dogs they will get 15 points.
B. For every dog you beat that pulls
23 x it’s weight = 2 pts
18 x it’s weight = 1 pt
12 x it’s weight = .5 pt
